100 Days of Sunlight by Abbie Emmons (Book Review)
Swearing: 5/10, frequent use of the word hell, the “S” word, and the “A” word.
Sexual Content: 3/10, mild touching, some kissing, a man tries to take advantage of the main character.
Recommended Age: 14+
A writer friend recommended 100 Days of Sunlight by Abbie Emmons to me a couple months ago. It's a contemporary romance, which isn't something I normally read, but I’ve heard good things about it, so I bought it.
The book is written in two perspectives: Tessa Dickinson, a poetry blogger, who lost her sight in a car accident, and Weston Ludovico, who got in a skateboarding accident that ended with the doctors amputating his legs. Tessa is self-loathing and angry with her situation, even though the doctors assure her that she will only be blind for 12 to 14 weeks, and Weston is optimistic even though half of his legs are prostheses.
Believing that writing again would help Tessa's mental and emotional health, her grandparents bought an ad in the newspaper for someone to type Tessa's poems for her. Weston, whose dad works at the local newspaper press, gets a hold of the ad despite it being retracted due to Tessa's objections. Even though Weston knows this, he decides to meet Tessa and show her how life is still worth living to the fullest, even if she can't see.
It is a romance, but despite being for young adult readers, it is surprisingly clean, in terms of sexual content. There are a couple kisses in the book, and there is a scene where Tessa touches Weston's hands, arms, and face, in her room, but it doesn't go farther than that. There is also one scene in the book where a man tries to take advantage of Tessa, but Weston comes in and scares him off. Other than some minor sexual content, there is some profanity, such as the very frequent use of the word hell, the "S" word, and the "A" word, mainly in Weston's perspective.
Besides that, the book has an amazing message about not allowing your circumstances define who you are going to be. I enjoyed reading it and I would recommend this book for anyone over the age of fourteen, because of minor sexual content and the cuss words.
The next post will be a dissection of this book's characters, plot, and character arc. I will post that one sometime in the near future, hopefully sometime next month.
